virtual dementia tour
Learn what it's like to live with dementia
Dementia is on the rise. And the Baby Boomer generation, the largest generation ever to reach senior status, is turning 75. These two facts are connected, the impact on society will be profound, and we can respond by creating new awareness around dementia.
Simulated Dementia Experience Creates Awareness, Understanding
With the growing numbers of dementia diagnoses, many MANY groups can benefit from the Virtual Dementia Tour...healthcare workers, family caregivers, first responders, business communities, faith communities, residential communities and, basically, any person or group who is likely to interact with seniors.

How It Works
The Virtual Dementia Tour combines various learning modes in order to optimize the impact of the event on participants' understanding of and behavior towards those with dementia.
The program begins with an immersive experience in which participants walk in the shoes of a person with dementia for 8 minutes, using patented virtual reality equipment to simulate dementia's symptoms.
Following the immersion, participants are guided through and expert-facilitated debrief discussion to reflect on and process what happened both practically and emotionally during those eight minutes, draw connections between dementia's symptoms and how they affect communications and behaviors, and explore how their new awareness may translate to action in future interactions with those who have or may have some form of dementia.

What to Expect from the Virtual Dementia Tour
Anyone can benefit from understanding what it's like to live with dementia. When we think about the growing number of diagnoses expected in the coming decades we can all be more dementia aware.
The VDT takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It is an immersive experience that can be quite profound.
Walk in the shoes of those living with dementia.
After people who experience the VDT they say that those living with dementia do not get the care that they need. And they commonly point to the need for greater patience with, and understanding of, those living with dementia.
The VDT is foundational to person-centered care.
Participants invariably say that the VDT experience points to the need for more patience and empathy from caregivers. The Virtual Dementia Tour inspires curiosity about cognitive changes associated with dementia and motivates participants to know more about dementia.
